quiet for too long

Not dead, just busy. To catch up:

We spent last weekend at Camp Pendleton, celebrating Veteran's Day with our Cool Neighbors in a cottage on the beach. That was awesome. There was much drinking and many s'mores, some surfing and even a little puking. Good Times. Also, Ryan (slightly buzzed from a dozen beers) insisted that I video tape his new belt buckle that the Cool Neighbors brought him from Thailand - he wanted you to know exactly HOW COOL this belt is. So here you have it. I had never been on a military base before and was surprised by many things, including the pizza vending machine.

This week, we celebrated Little Sister's 21st birthday with her. Always cute to see a newly minted adult order a fruity margarita and then refuse to drink it because it tastes like Tequila. Then also crinkle her nose at the pina colada that she ordered because, again, it tastes like booze. Aw, how adorable.

This weekend, the rest of the Fam took off to Vegas to celebrate with Little Sis in style, and Ryan and I stayed behind with Little Brother. We decided it was time for the next step in his Junior High School Life and so we took him out to Six Flags Magic Mountain yesterday for some hard-core roller coaster ridin'. He'd never been on any coasters bigger than the ones that Disneyland has to offer, so this was a major step. We eased him into it by starting on Colossus, which is a HUGE wooden coaster, but at least didn't have loops and then we skipped a few steps by taking him on Scream, which is full of g-force and verts and twisty loop-de-loos. Awesome. To his credit : he never once cried or puked, although he was so buzzed on adrenaline that he said (quote) "I think we should ride it again, or I'm going to go run a mile, or kick some guy in the balls." Aw, kids grow up so fast don't they?

Day One as the FNG

Today was my first official day at the New Job. Even though they don't have an official policy about blogging about work, out of respect for the company* and the people that I work with, I am working with pseudonyms. So, sorry, but let's just call it ABC Corp.

This week is ABC Corp's huge gigantic annual conference and so EVERYONE is out of the office. No exaggeration. My floor has about 200 people on it, but today it was me and 3 other people. Which is ok - I mean I guess there are worse ways of starting a new job - but it was kind of boring. I won't have a computer until next week and it took 1/2 the day to find me an old, unused system so that I would have something to do. Namely, browse the company web site and sit around and wait for IT to create me a log-in for the New Hire Orientation stuff. So it was pretty dull, but I'm not complaining.

The worst part is that I was still trying to be a good girl - I honestly wanted something to do. I felt to guilty to blog or even browse Flickr. Instead, I really did read the web site (snooze) and browsed the top news stories (in case you missed it, Saddam is guilty and not to happy about the sentence) so that it at least SEEMED like I am a good corporate citizen.

I guess the relevant question is : do I really have to dress nice tomorrow? I mean, are the other people going to narc that the new kid came in wearing monkey pj's?

*all I will say is that I have moved up 62 places on the Fortune 100 list. Thus, the need to be a little guarded about giving away names and places.
