more bragging

Just found out that Somebody I Know* is going to get to help design a piece for a movie that won't be out until probably next year. But all the same, I am so proud of Somebody I Know.

*I don't know if I am allowed to publicly brag about it, but feel free to speculate about who Somebody is. He's my favorite kind of Somebody, if that helps.**

**hint : it's not Henry Rollins, it's my OTHER favorite

where you been, girl?

I guess I should start with St. Pat's since we're just about recovered. Not to say that I personally imbibed any green beer, but it was great just the same. The rain and cold and RIDICULOUS crowds at the pubs forced us back to John & Rosey's place where we listened to Dropkick Murphys, watched Boondock Saints, and gagged on Guiness - simultaneously, of course. We ended up staying out all night long, because you know how it goes when John's been drinkin'... it gets Mia to start challenging him to cards! It was a hectic game of Skip-Bo, with Rosey kicking our asses (even though she claims that she doesn't remember any of it -- she said she thought she dreamed about playing cards).

This past week was so completely chock-full that last night somewhere 'round about midnight my brain started to collapse upon itself. My New Boss is changing roles in the company and so last week was my last week "with" her (although she's just down the hall, I needed to wrap up about a bazillion projects and questions before she left me) and we also had a Mondo Event that didn't pan out to be so great, but it ate up forkfuls of our time. Simultaneously, I tried to squeeze in some PTO* to visit with my favorite (and only) Niecely Beastie, Molly. She and her 'rents were here to tour some colleges and decide where they would be moving in the Fall. Apparently the choice was easy, one glance at Clairmont and the decision was made (Miss Bliss, hook us up! This is your 'hood!). They'll be moving here in the pursuit of art and happiness, and a little education, I suppose, this August. Ryan is beside himself with excitement to have some of his favorite people only a half hour away! Woo hoo!!

So while they were all here, we took a jaunt off to the Happiest Place on Earth (check Flickr for photographic evidence) which was perfect. We missed the Spring Break crowd, the weather held up just right (not too hot, the rain blew away), and I got to spend a lot of time with Miss Molly. She is so freaking adorable, I could puke. In a good way. While the Big Kids went on the fast rides, she and I rode It's a Small World repeatedly -- she couldn't get enough of the mermaids and my heart just melted every time she impersonated the way they sing (as if underwater : sing the song, but run your finger up and down on your lips really fast at the same time). I tried to coax her on some other rides, but she kept telling me that she wasn't ready, but probably when she's 8 she'll be brave enough (she's 6 now) for the Haunted Mansion. Kids!

I also used some of my time off to read (I think I read 4 books) and watch movies (about a hundred of 'em). It's amazing what you can do with vacation time when you stay in your pajamas all day and stay up 'til the wee hours of the night! It sure makes going back to work SUCK. ASS.

Jailbird - Kurt Vonnegut

Somehow I have had this book on my shelf for years, and never read it. Imagine! I have had a full on crush on Kurt Vonnegut since I could read, and his books only improve with age (mine, not his) -- I suppose that has more to do with me "getting it" than the book, since the pages obviously aren't re-writing themselves. Jailbird somehow seemed more timely than ever : the rogue tale of communists with big hearts who ultimately miss the prize. And so on.

Attention Comic Nerdz

Disclaimer : this post is full of boasting and bragging and general ego-boosting

This weekend is the Wizard World convention in LA, which is in LA for the first year. Previously, it had been in Long Beach, where it had to battle against Grand Prix set-up crews, which sucked. Now it's in LA and I don't think it's going to be much better. The area is kind of shady, and a pain to get to from our house (yes, I am lazy), and then I heard Kevin Smith talking today about Sunday is the LA Marathon -- lol. This means that there will be 50 million EXTRA people crowding around. Uh, no thanks. We might go on Saturday for a bit, if we go at all. We're still kind of on the fence and no one else in our crew seems to excited about it (except those who have autograph signings and what-not).

Instead, on Sunday, we will be up in LA for something else -- to support the local organic farmers who are being bullied off their land, and their Market is being closed to make way for... what else?... expensive buildings! This has been one of The Kid's causes that he's been working on, to raise funds and awareness, and Sunday may be the last time that the Market is open to the public. Most likely, we will be there.

In other braggardly news, May 6, 2006 is FREE COMIC BOOK DAY (yes, it has its own website) and Ryan has been working dutifully all week to finish up the pages for the book he's working on (it isn't listed on the Free Comic Book day site yet, and I'm not sure if I am legally allowed to reveal which series it is - hooray for non-disclosure agreements!), but in any case it will be ready and Ryan will be available LIVE! IN PERSON! to autograph his work at The Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach, CA on May 6th. I know you're excited -- so I wanted to give you plenty of time to plan ahead. Remember, the 6th is a Saturday and you'll be nursing your Cinco De Mayo margarita headache, so be prepared. Vomiting chips & salsa on the autograph signers is not allowed. Bring them chips & salsa, however, is allowed.

you know what time it is

Ok, so I admit. I am a loser. I have been keeping up with Flavor of Love kind of on the down-low over the past few weeks (re-runs on lazy Sunday afternoons are hard to channel away from, especially when it’s rainy and cold and the alternatives are few). I know, I know... it's reality TV. And trash reality TV at that... and yet.

*deep breath*

So last night, I flipped on the TV and there were rerun episodes (leading up to the finale) and so I left it on while I made dinner and what-not. The boys teased me relentlessly, and I told them to shut it or they would be eating cat food for dinner (this worked surprisingly well). During dinner, we left it on, because by that time they were both interested in the goings-on ("who just said that? Hottie? She is such a bitch" "Oh, I bet that Pumpkin wins") and so it just stayed the rest of the night. It was just kind of background noise while we worked on stuff and did our own things... but we still kept an eye out. So then Evan left to hang out with his new girlie and I said "don't forget your curfew - be home by 10" and he says "oh yeah, the final episode? I’ll be home". Sadly, he was. He says it was coincidence, but I am not so sure. Does this make me a bad parent, to make your kids come home in time to watch crappy reality TV??

I suppose it speaks volumes about our maturity that we both practically peed from laughing so hard at the spit-in-the-face exit of Pumpkin. And that we chose to watch the show in the first place. But as it turned out, all three of us ended up lined up on the couch last night waiting for the final elimination - which was at the end of a 90 minute episode (man, how did I get sucked into that one??). Although I don't see any real future for Flavor Flav and Hoopz, I am glad that New York got sent home.

faith & friendship

My faith in the kindness of people -- even strangers -- has never been stronger. In fact, I am shaken and stirred and frazzled and... overwhelmed, frankly.

Geekman was so generous to redesign this site, so that you could stare at my ass slung up in a horseshoe.

Solonor is now the heir to my first-born child for installing MT on this site, so that I can blog like a grown-up.

Neither of these fine fine fine examples of human beings knows me at all -- in fact, I don't even know their real names -- and both sacrificed a great deal to help me out. I couldn't appreciate it more. I honestly couldn't. If you know either or both of these people in real life -- please give them a squeezy hug for me and buy them a burrito or cocktail -- their choice! -- and I will pay you back. I promise. And I vow to pay it forward... so when you need $5 or medical advice or marketing counseling or a knitted blanket, I am your gal.
